eduroam wifi access for more and more people

Eduroam (education roaming) is the secure, worldwide roaming wireless network developed for the international research and education community. The eduroam footprint continues to expand, across countries and beyond university campuses to support global mobility for more academics, students and researchers.

Eduroam is now accessible in 101 countries around the world, with Ethiopia being among the latest to join the eduroam family.

According to a report recently published on the eduroam.org website, the latest statistics for the eduroam service show continued growth for 2017 with an 18% increase in international authentications and a 21% increase in national authentications on the previous year.

In 2017, the eduroam AuthN system recorded over 3.6 billion national authentications (where users from another institution in the same country authenticate their WiFi access via eduroam) and more than 834 million international authentications.

A project funded by the Trans-Eurasian Information Network (TEIN) has seen eduroam successfully deployed in Bhutan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines and Sri Lanka and subsequent workshops have delivered training to engineers from more countries where there is limited or no access to eduroam, extending the reach of the service further. This project was led by AARNet (Australia’s Academic Network) and involved network engineers from several national research and education networks training network engineers from the new participating countries to provide them with the skills they need and ongoing support in order to deploy and manage eduroam in their home countries.

The advantage of eduroam is that the service provides millions of students, researchers and academic staff with mobility between participating institutions’ wireless infrastructures, without the burden of institutional administration of guest network access.

Eduroam is currently available at more than 12,000 locations worldwide, including university campuses, airports, hospitals, buses, schools, museums and more.
