Convenient connectivity while abroad

Mexican student Abraham Montoya Obeso discovered the advantages of eduroam during his stay at the University of Bordeaux in France. Eduroam (education roaming) is the secure, worldwide roaming access developed for the international research and education community. It gives you convenient connectivity, not only on your home campus, but also when visiting other institutions connected to the service.

“A friend at the laboratory told me, that when visiting a Spanish university he had accessed the Internet through eduroam. When your home institution uses eduroam you are automatically connected wherever you go, provided the institution you’re visiting is using the service,” says Abraham Montoya Obeso, who is a third-semester student at the Centro de Investigación y Desarrollo de Tecnología Digital (CITEDI Tijuana B) of the Instituto Politécnico Nacional.

“Looking online, I realized that only the research & education network CUDI offered the service in México. I approached CUDI, who granted me a temporary eduroam account. While staying in Bordeaux I also noticed that there were many access points in the city and in public transport stations. I was connected without problems to communicate, consult a map or navigate.

“I really think it is very good to have this benefit when leaving the country as a student. It was very useful for me too. If an institution plans to internationalize through their students, it should explore the possibility of providing this service,” said Abraham.
